Hittin' Switchez VM Tutorial
Is VirtualBox currently installed?

YES - VirtualBox (higher than v6.0.24) is currently installed and I'd like to try 3D acceleration

YES - VirtualBox (higher than v6.0.24) is currently installed, but I don't care about 3D acceleration

NO - VirtualBox is not installed

Downgrading to VirtualBox v6 from v7
Backup any existing VMs (or take note where they are currently stored) and uninstall VirtualBox.

On rare occasion after uninstalling VirtualBox there are files that won’t be removed. This will manifest as an error when you try to start a VM.

VirtualBox error
If this happens, follow these steps:

• Uninstall VirtualBox from your computer and reboot.

• Press Win + R, paste C:\Windows\System32\drivers, and press Enter.

• Use the search bar and type vbox*.sys

• Delete all matching files (vboxdrv.sys, vboxnetadp.sys, etc.) using Shift + Delete

• If any won’t delete, rename them, reboot, and repeat - they should delete successfully

Proceed to the next step for new installation.

Fresh VirtualBox Install
Do you want a regular install (software rendering), or try 3D acceleration (hardware rendering)?

Don't know which one to choose? Just pick software, hardware rendering doesn't look any different.

Install VirtualBox for software rendering
Download and install the newest VirtualBox Platform Package for your OS from the link below, and uncheck this option on the last step:

Adding the virtual machine
If VirtualBox is running, you may close it.

Download the main archive and extract the VM zip inside (WinXP-SP3.zip) from here:

https://archive.org/compress/hittin-switchez/formats=ZIP&file=/hittin-switchez.zip

Here is a link to the archive.org page itself:

https://archive.org/details/hittin-switchez

Extract it to a folder, then double-click WinXP-SP3.vbox
VM file

The machine is now in VirtualBox - click Start
VM start
Misc settings and running the game
Ignore any messages that pop up.
If you're attempting 3D acceleration, click Start then Run and run dxdiag to see if Direct3D is enabled under the display tab.

If it isn't, then welcome to my world. I only had it working once, then never again.
Make sure Auto Resize Guest Display is on, and I set the scale to 225%
Maximize the window, press Right Ctrl + F (the right-hand side Ctrl button), then click Switch
Finally, start the game.

If you're running software rendering you'll see this error - just click OK

Success! If you'd like to now upgrade the game music to official sound tracks (I highly recommend it!)

then CLICK HERE

Before the game was patched, you would have seen this:

Notes
Always use Ctrl + F to enter fullscreen BEFORE starting the game, it doesn't like entering fullscreen once in game.

If you ever want to reinstall the game, the installer is in the folder on the desktop along with patched and unpatched files.
Do not ever connect this VM to the internet.

You may drag and drop files from this machine to your host OS, or from your host OS into the machine. I tried this with VirtualBox 7 with the newest guest additions and it would not work properly. I had to have v6 guest additions with newest VirtualBox for whatever reason, likely a WinXP issue specifically but I haven't confirmed this yet nor do I care anymore because it works.

The VM is set to max out at 5GB hard drive size, you can make that larger in the VM settings in VirtualBox, but after that you'll need to boot the VM with an ISO like GParted Live and resize the existing partition.
